History
The Getty Museum began in J. Paul Getty’s home in Pacific Palisades 1954. He expanded the building by adding an addition to the art gallery. In the 1970s, the Getty built a model of the Italian building on its site to improve its collection. It began to open in 1974. After Getty died in 1976, the entire building was transferred to the Getty Trust for museum purposes. The collection from the property was transferred to the Getty Villa, and management wanted to move it to a site near Los Angeles. The property at the center of the site is a 24-acre (9.7 ha) park located on 110 acres (45 ha) in the Santa Monica Mountains above Interstate 405 and surrounded by 600 acres (240 ha). Its natural state was first announced in 1983. The summit is 270 meters above sea level. It is so high that on a clear day, you can see not only the Los Angeles skyline but also the mountains of San Bernardino and the San Gabriel mountains to the east and the mountains: Sunset and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
The cost of the center is $733 million. This represents $449 million for construction plus $115 million for site construction and land plus $30 million for equipment and fixtures, and $139 million for fees, permits, and insurance policies of engineers and architects such as Stéphane D . Rountree, former director of the Getty’s architecture program and director of operations and planning for the trust.
